The area around Orbost was first settled in 1842 and originally used for cattle grazing. A township began to develop in the 1870s and it eventually became an important service centre for what has developed into a major cattle and agricultural district. The surrounding mountain forests produce hardwood timber, most of which is milled locally.
The largest remaining cool and warm temperate rainforests are found in East Gippsland. You can explore these ancient old growth forests and unspoilt wilderness. A network of good fire trails allows easy access during spring to autumn. Check these links for more detailed information
Visit Cape Conran Coastal reserve and see the display of natural beauty with a stunning coastline of headlands , rocky shores, sheltered bays and endless golden beaches, Enjoy swimming, surfing, picnics and wildflower plains. East of Marlo,Pt Ricardo beach is for surf fishing and beautiful sunsets.Yeerung Estuary is a delightful place for family outings.
Only 14 kilometres from orbost, Marlo is where the Snowy River meets the sea. It is a small community with great views and a history as a port where paddle steamers, ketches and schooners carried produce on the river and to Melbourne. These days it is mainly a holiday and fishing village.
A great place for bicycle riding
There are many great rides around Orbost. These two websites have bike rides for all levels of fitness.
Forest Park is an attractive reserve in Orbost, wedged between Nicholson Street and the Snowy River. It features a slab hut which was built in 1872 and relocated to its present site. The hut is open to the public and is the local tourist information centre. It is furnished as a period settler's home.
Other attractions in Forest Park include the Orbost Exhibition Centre and gallery. The Exhibition centre is next to the Slab Hut and has great art and wood work exhibitions at a very minimal cost.
The Sensory Gardens are a short walk from Forest Park along Forest Rd and past the old butter factory..
Good views of Orbost, the Snowy River and the bridges across its flood plain can be enjoyed from Grandview Lookout, located south-west of Orbost in the small community of Newmerella.
